Judit Vall Castello es Profesora Asociada en el Departamento de Economía de la Universitat de Barcelona e Investigadora en el Institut d’Economia de Barcelona (IEB) y en el Centro de Investigación en Economía y Salud (CRES) de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), donde ha sido Directora de investigación. Tiene un PhD en Economía por Universiteit Maastricht (Países Bajos) y cursó sus estudios de grado en la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Ha participado en proyectos internacionales en el NBER, UNICEF y Cambridge University, y ha dictado cursos de grado y posgrado en universidades de España (UPF y Universdad de Girona), Países Bajos (Universiteit Maastricht) y México (Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey). Ha obtenido prestigiosos reconocimientos de los programas ICREA Academia, Fulbright-Schuman y las becas Marie Curie de la Comisión Europea y Robert Solow del Centre Cournot pour la recherche en économie. Sus investigaciones se centran en evaluación de políticas, especialmente en las áreas de economía de la salud y economía laboral. Sus trabajos han sido publicados en revistas académicas como Economic Journal, Health Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Labour Economics o Economics of Education Review, entre otras.

Abstract: This paper investigates the causal link between healthcare access and intimate partner violence (IPV) victims’ help-seeking behavior. Access to healthcare serves as a critical avenue for screening or detecting IPV. Doctors are legally mandated to report suspected criminal injuries to the authorities and can guide victims towards IPV support services. We exploit the 2012 reform in Spain that removed access to the public healthcare system for undocumented immigrants. We use court reports and protection order requests from the Judicial Branch of the Spanish government to perform a difference-in-differences approach, comparing the help-seeking behavior of foreign and Spanish women before and after the reform. We find that restricting healthcare access led to an immediate 12% decrease in IPV reporting and protection order applications among foreign women, particularly in regions with strict enforcement. Importantly, we show evidence that the reform did not change the underlying incidence of IPV but the results are driven by a reduction in injury reports from medical centers. Our findings are important given the increase in migration flows globally as well as for current debates on granting/limiting access to healthcare for marginalized groups.
