Abstract: There is a substantial body of literature studying the effects of trade shocks on jobs and wages. It is unclear whether these effects are passed down to future generations. This paper examines whether the heterogeneous increase in Chinese import competition across Brazilian industries has permanently affected children of differently exposed fathers. We use a specific survey module that contains precise retrospective data on parental employment and education, among other characteristics, and apply a well-established instrumental variable strategy. Our findings show that children of more exposed fathers have lower education and earnings in their adulthood. They also have a higher likelihood of having an informal job, being employed in operational occupations, and relying on social assistance. Importantly, these effects are stronger for children from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We conclude that the trade shock had a negative causal effect on intergenerational mobility and exacerbated poverty traps.
