Argentina Entry Requirements

The Argentinian migration policy is established in Ley Nº 25.871, Decreto 616/2010 (Act Number 25.871, Decree Number 616/2010).

For operational purposes the National Direction of Migration of Argentina divides the entry of foreign citizens in groups:

  • Native citizens who are from the MERCOSUR member states and associate states (Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela).
  • Native citizens who are from countries which are not associated to the MERCOSUR, who do not require a VISA to enter the country as tourists.
  • Native citizens who are from countries which are not associated to the MERCOSUR, who require a VISA to enter the Argentinian territory.

Students, professors or researchers who are from a country in the first and second group, and wish to stay in Argentina for a period longer than 90 days, enter the country as tourists; once arrived in the country, their VISA category will be changed at the National Direction of Migration branch office located in La Plata, paying the corresponding migration tax. The following documents from the country of origin must be submitted:

  • Native citizens who are from the MERCOSUR member states and associate states (Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela).

-For a stay longer than three months: Certificate of Criminal Record issued by the country of origin, or the country of residence during the last THREE (3) years, duly authenticated by the Argentinian consulate of the issuing country, or with a stamp of Apostille of the Hague Convention.

• Native citizens who are from countries which are not associated to the MERCOSUR, who do not require a VISA to enter the country as tourists.

-For a stay longer than three months and shorter than six months: Valid passport.

-For a stay longer than six months: Certificate of Criminal Record issued by the country of origin, or the country of residence during the last FIVE (5) years, duly authenticated by the Argentinian consulate of the issuing country, or with a stamp of Apostille of the Hague Convention.

Additionally, once arrived in the country, other documents must be submitted when initiating the administrative procedures for residence the in the country, which will be promptly informed by the Department of International University Relations IN the university, along with the documents from the country of origin.

The citizens who are part of the last group must contact the Department of International University Relations of the UNLP, at least 4 months prior to the arrival date at rel.internacionales@presi.unlp.edu.ar .

In the case of academics, their stay in the country is regulated by the Article 23, Subheading "I", and the Article 24, Subheading "F" of the Ley Nº 25.871 [Act No. 25.871].

In order to accept academics who wish to stay in the country for a period longer than 3 months, an agreement must be singed between the UNLP and the institution of origin of the academic.
